The Bible tells us in Hebrews 11.6 that without faith, it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. So what does it mean to have true faith? Let’s dive deeper into this question.
True faith goes beyond simply acknowledging God’s existence. It involves a deep and unwavering trust in His promises. In Mark chapter 11 verses 23 and 24, Jesus illustrates this with a powerful metaphor. Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, Go, throw yourself into the sea, and does not doubt in their heart, but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. This teaching of Jesus is not limited to a literal understanding but highlights the immense capacity of faith to achieve the impossible.
To live this true faith, a radical change in our mindset is necessary. Often our experiences and human logic lead us to doubt or limit what we believe to be possible. However, the faith that Jesus describes requires us to set aside these limitations and trust completely in God’s power.
It is not just about asking something from God, but believing without hesitation, that He can and will do what we ask, according to His will. This full trust implies a complete surrender to God’s power and will.
It is not enough to merely desire our prayers to be answered. We must firmly believe that God has the power to move the mountains in our lives. This means that even when we face seemingly insurmountable obstacles, our faith sustains us and gives us the certainty that God is working on our behalf. This total surrender is a continuous process of spiritual growth and involves seeking a closer relationship with God through prayer, reading the Bible, and living out His commandments. When we completely surrender to Him, we allow His will to guide our lives.
This attitude of submission and trust opens the doors for God to work in extraordinary ways performing miracles and transformations that to human eyes seem impossible. Therefore, true faith is active and dynamic. It calls us to act by the trust we place in God. By declaring in faith that the mountains will be moved, we are not only expressing our belief in divine power, but also aligning our actions and expectations with this belief. True faith challenges us to live in a way that reflects our unwavering trust in God, regardless of the circumstances. The second step is obedience. Faith without works is dead, as stated in James 2.26.
For our prayers to be effective, we need to live a life aligned with God’s will. Jesus said in John 15.7, If you remain in me and my words remain in you,
Ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” This means we must follow His commandments and allow His Word to shape our lives. Obedience is an expression of our faith and love for God. Obedience transcends mere compliance with rules and regulations.
It is a way of living in full harmony with divine principles. When we talk about obedience to God, we are referring to a heart attitude that seeks above all to please Him and follow His ways. In Deuteronomy chapter 28 verses 1 and 2, God presents a clear and encouraging promise. If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all His commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.
All these blessings will come on you and accompany if you obey the Lord your God. This passage underscores the importance of hearing and obeying God’s voice. Obedience here is not an act of blind submission, but a conscious commitment to living according to God’s will. It is a response to the love and grace we receive from Him. When we choose to obey, we are demonstrating our trust in His wisdom and our desire to live under His guidance.
Living in harmony with God’s principles means that our actions, thoughts, and decisions are shaped by what He teaches. This implies a continuous alignment with His commandments, which are designed to guide us toward a full and blessed life. Instead of seeing God’s commandments as restrictions, we should understand them as directions that lead us to true freedom and fulfillment. God’s promise in Deuteronomy shows us that obedience attracts blessings.
These blessings are not only material, but also include peace, joy, wisdom, and a profound sense of purpose. Additionally, obedience connects us more deeply with God, In John 15, verse 10, Jesus said, If you keep My commands, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commands and remain in His love.
Through obedience, we experience a more intimate relationship with God. His attributes and blessings become more evident in our lives. Obedience is a powerful testimony to others. When we live according to God’s principles, our lives reflect His light and truth. This can inspire those around us to also seek a relationship with God and experience the blessings that come from obedience. Our life of obedience can be a living example of God’s transformative power. The third step is perseverance.
In Luke 18.1, Jesus tells the parable of the persistent widow to teach the need to always pray and not give up.
Perseverance in prayer shows our determination and unwavering faith. Sometimes God’s answer does not come immediately, but He encourages us to keep asking, seeking, and knocking on the door. Perseverance strengthens our character and brings us closer to God. Persevering in prayer means not giving up even when circumstances seem unfavorable.
In Romans 12, verse 12, Paul exhorts us, Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Constant and fervent prayer is a demonstration of our trust in God. It is the certainty that He is in control and will respond at the right time. Perseverance teaches us to depend on God and trust in His wisdom and perfect timing. The fourth step is gratitude. In Philippians chapter 4 verses 6 and 7, Paul tells us,
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Gratitude opens our hearts to recognize the blessings we have already received and puts us in a position to receive even more from God. Gratitude transforms our perspective and strengthens our faith. The practice of gratitude leads us to a more intimate and deep relationship with God. In Colossians 3.15, we are instructed to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts and to be thankful.

When we express gratitude, we acknowledge God’s goodness and faithfulness in all areas of our lives. Being grateful is recognizing that everything we have and everything we are, comes from God. It is a way of constantly reminding ourselves of the countless blessings He gives us daily, many of which may go unnoticed if we are not attentive.
The practice of gratitude encourages us to focus on the positive, on the good things that God has done for us, rather than on the difficulties and challenges. This shift in focus can transform the way we see the world and our own lives. Furthermore, gratitude creates a cycle of blessings in our lives. When we are grateful, we open our hearts to receive even more of God’s goodness. It is as if gratitude activates a chain reaction of blessings.
By acknowledging the blessings, we have already received we become more aware of new opportunities and gifts that God places in our path.
This continuous cycle of gratitude and blessings strengthens our faith and trust in God. Gratitude is also a sign of humility. By being grateful, we admit that we are not self-sufficient and that we depend on God for everything. We recognize that we are finite and limited beings and that we need God’s grace and mercy in our lives. This humility is essential for a healthy relationship with God as it places us in a position of dependence and openness to what He wants to do in us and through us. Moreover, gratitude helps us accept God’s will even when we do not fully understand His plans.
When we express gratitude, we are telling God that we trust Him even in difficult times. We are affirming that we believe in His sovereignty and in His ability to transform all things for our good. This acceptance of God’s will, accompanied by gratitude, gives us peace and strength to face any situation. Practicing gratitude also positively impacts our relationships with the people around us. A grateful person tends to be more positive, welcoming and generous.
By expressing our gratitude to God, we are also inspired to express gratitude to the people in our lives recognizing and valuing the role they play. This strengthens our bonds of friendship and love creating an atmosphere of support and affection. Gratitude therefore is not only a spiritual act but also an act of personal healing and transformation. It helps us better cope with stress and anxiety as by focusing on the good things We lessen the weight of our worries.
Studies show that people who practice gratitude regularly have lower stress levels and are generally happier. This is reflected in our physical, mental and emotional health. Now that we know the four steps, faith, obedience, perseverance and gratitude, it is time to put them into practice. Let us begin with a prayer that incorporates these elements, asking God to help us grow in each of them. Lord God, loving and merciful Father, we approach you with hearts full of gratitude for your infinite goodness and mercy.
We acknowledge that you are the creator of all things and our provider. We thank you for your constant presence in our lives, for sustaining us and guiding us at all times. Lord, we ask that you increase our faith. We know that without faith it is impossible to please you. Therefore, we ask you to strengthen our trust in you, help us to rely on your promises, and believe that you can accomplish the impossible in our lives. When we face mountains of difficulties, assure us that you are powerful enough to move them.
Teach us to depend completely on you, to seek your will in every situation, and to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Father, We ask that you help us to live in obedience. We want to follow your commandments and live according to your principles. Give us a heart that is willing to hear your voice and follow your direction.
Help us to be faithful in small and great things, to reflect your love and truth in our daily actions. May our obedience be a testimony of our love for you and our trust in your wisdom. Let us be living examples of Your transforming power, living in a way that pleases You in all areas of our lives. Lord, we ask that You grant us perseverance. We know that the Christian life is a journey that requires patience and determination. Give us the strength to keep praying, even when the answers seem delayed.
Help us not to lose heart in the face of difficulties, but to persevere in faith. trusting that You are always in control. May we learn to wait on You with hope and joy, knowing that all things work together for the good of those who love You and are called according to Your purpose.
Help us to keep our focus on You, to seek Your presence daily, and to find renewal and strength in Your love. Father, we ask that You fill our hearts with gratitude, Help us to recognize and thank you for all the blessings we receive daily. Teach us to be grateful in all circumstances, knowing that you are good and that your love endures forever. May our gratitude draw us closer to you, recognizing your hand in every detail of our lives. Let’s explore a biblical example that incorporates these four steps. In 1 Samuel 1, we find the story of Hannah, a barren woman who prayed fervently for a child. Hannah had faith that God could fulfill her desire. She lived in obedience, persevered in prayer, and finally expressed gratitude when God answered her plea. Hannah is a powerful example of how faith, obedience, perseverance, and gratitude can lead to answered prayer.
Hannah went to the temple and poured out her soul before the Lord. In 1 Samuel 1.11, she made a vow saying, “‘Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me and not forget your servant, but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.'” Hannah prayed with faith and committed obedience to God. Hannah persevered in her prayer despite not seeing immediate results.
In 1 Samuel 1.12, we read that, as she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Her perseverance and dedication caught the attention of the priest Eli, who initially did not understand the depth of her devotion. But Hannah did not give up continuing to cry out to God with fervor and hope. Hannah’s gratitude was evident when God answered her prayer. In 1 Samuel 1.20, it says, God’s response to Hannah’s prayer was a powerful testimony of His faithfulness.
Hannah fulfilled her vow, bringing Samuel to the temple and dedicating him to the Lord. Her story is a reminder that God hears and answers our prayers when we follow the steps of faith, obedience, perseverance, and gratitude. Let’s bring these principles into our own lives. In our daily prayers, we need to cultivate faith, living with the assurance that God is in control and capable of doing the impossible. We must strive to obey His commandments knowing that obedience creates an environment where His blessings can flourish.
We need to persevere, praying constantly and fervently, even when results are not immediate. And finally, we must be grateful, recognizing and thanking God for all the blessings we have already received. An effective prayer life is built on the solid foundation of faith. In Mark 9 23, Jesus reminds us, if you can believe, All things are possible to him who believes. This powerful declaration challenges us to trust fully in God, believing that He is capable of meeting all our needs.
Faith is not just a feeling but a decision to trust God regardless of the circumstances. Obedience is the natural response to our faith. When we believe in God and His promises, we are motivated to live according to His commandments, in 1 John 3.22 we read, and whatever we ask we receive from Him because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.
Obedience aligns us with God’s will, allowing His blessings to flow freely in our lives. Perseverance is the test of our faith in action. Even when answers seem delayed, when obstacles pile up, and when doubts try to invade our hearts, It is perseverance that keeps us firm. In Hebrews 10.36 we read, For you need patience, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise. To persevere is to continue believing, praying, and trusting even when everything around us seems contrary.
This determination allows us to see God’s promises fulfilled in our lives. Gratitude is the response to persevering faith. In 1 Thessalonians 5.18, we are instructed, Gratitude transforms our prayers, filling us with joy and hope. When we are grateful, we acknowledge God’s goodness and His hand at work in our lives.

In John 14.21, Jesus said, whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.
